Is the belief that a country should develop and maintain a strong military force to be able to defend itself against attack and to promote national interests. . . . Militarism was one of the main causes of World War 1 as the arms race increased tensions between the neighbouring countries. Militarism was helped along with the formation of alliances and the growth of nationalism and imperialism. All these factors created the belief and building of a strong military forces would show power and increase national pride.
